The 2009 weed treatment season is now underway. After much discussion it was decided that the first treatment this year would start on June 9. Skip Wiegersma, of Skips Aquatic Solutions along with the Lake Gaston Weed Control Council have development a treatment plan that will use $700,000.00 of the this year’s weed treatment money to treat approximately 1,000 acres. According to Weed Council Treasurer, Rives (Judge) Manning, Jr. of Halifax County the figure represents half of what each county would normally contribute. This is based on money in hand by the council. The money is not part of the debates going on in the various county budgets. The counties around the Lake all work on fiscal year budget from Jul 1 to Jun 30. The weed council works on a calendar year budget, Jan 1 to Dec 31. As of this writing the treatment areas have been announced for the week of Jun 8. The schedule is: Click on creek for map of treatment area - Tuesday, June 9th - Lee’s Creek, Poe Creek, and Pretty Creek; Wednesday, June 10th - Dogwood Branch, Cool Spring Branch, and Speckle Cove; Thursday, June 11th - Lizard Creek and Poplar Creek.
